Jaipurhat District Information
Jaipurhat is a district in Northern Bangladesh within the Rajshahi Division. It was the subdivision of the Bogra district and since 1984 it is a district. The district consists of 3 municipalities, 27 wards, 5 upazilas, 32 union parishads, 719 mouzas, 74 mahallas and 898 villages. The upazilas are:
Area: 965.44 sq km
Boundary: Jaipurhat district is bounded by dinajpur district on the north, Naogoan districts on the south, Bogra and Gaibandha districts on the east, Bogra and Naogaon districts and Indian province of West Bengal on the west.
Main rivers: Little Jamuna, Tulsi Ganga and Haramati.
Weather: Annual average temperature is maximum 34.6°C, minimum 11.9°C.
Annual rainfall: 1610 mm.
Marks of the War of Liberation: Jaipurhat has 4 Mass killing sites of 1971, 2 memorials and 3 mass graves.
Population: 844818; male 51.03%, female 48.97%
Religion: Muslim 88.18%, Hindu 9.57% and others 2.25%
Ethnic community: Santal, Orao, Munda, Mahali, Koch, Pahan, Buna, Ho, Mahato, Rajbangshi and Koch. Total tribal population is 48,000 (2001)
Literacy rate: 19.8%; male 27.4% and female 11.8%.
Main occupations: Agriculture 53.33%, agricultural labourer 24.85%, commerce 9.95% etc.
Main crops: Paddy, potato, sugarcane, banana, jute, turmeric, mustard seed and vegetables.
Main exports: Sugar and jute.
Jaipurhat produces a huge amount of sugarcane. It has the country’s largest sugar-mill.
One of the three Girls Cadet Colleges of Bangladesh is situated in Jaipurhat since 2005. Jaipurhat has 2 government colleges, 15 non-government college and many other educational institute.
Legendary woman “Bina Pani Sarkar” is giving the educational support for the lowest privileged children by her own interest and she has been selected as “Shada Moner Manush” for this contribution.
Places to see:
• Jamalganj which is situated 10 KM (approx) south west of Jaipurhat. This place is mainly famous for its long traditional bazaar. It’s famous for agricultural products like banana, paddy, rice, wheat, potato etc. it is also famous for mine of coal (bituminous) and cement.
